Thoughts on Life and Liberty from an Average Middle-Class Kentuckian

Frugal Living Part 1

on May 15, 2016

Many of you know what it’s like nowadays to pinch every penny just to get by. In this series of articles, I want to share with you some of my favorite ways to save money.

In this first installment, let’s talk television providers. There are dozens of providers out there, eager to sell you access to hundreds of channels that you’ll never watch. My tv provider is… (drum roll.) I don’t have one anymore.

We now use Roku, the internet streaming device that lets you watch the movies and television shows you want, without paying for all the stuff you don’t. Roku has a selection of devices to suit different needs. We chose Roku 2. It cost about $70 at Wal-Mart. With dozens of free channels on Roku, that $70 could have been all we spent on tv content forever; but, we chose a different option.

Two years ago we were paying $98 per month for the Top150 package from Dish Network. Of those 150 channels we only watched about a dozen. Now we have Netflix, HuluPlus, and Amazon Prime. At approximately $8 per month for each of these services, that’s $24 verses $98 – a savings of $74 each and every month, a whopping $888 per year!

Content streaming has become a movement among the frugal, being promoted with labels such as “Cutting the Cord,” and “Ditching the Dish.

I know different can be scary; but sometimes we must think outside the box when we are looking for ways to save money. We kept our Dish service active for a couple of months while we evaluated the Roku. As time passed, we watched the Roku more and more, and Dish less and less.

If you think you might want to join the new generation of Cord Cutters, there are other choices besides Roku. If you try any of those others feel free to comment here and let me know how you like it.
